The 11th edition of Green Week, the biggest annual conference on European environment policy, will take place from 24 to 27 May 2011 in Brussels and around Europe. This year’s theme is “Resource Efficiency - Using less, living better”.
24 May - 16.30 - 18.00
Food wastage is a striking example of inefficient resource use: every year, 89 million tonnes of food is wasted in Europe by food processing plants, retailers, restaurants and consumers. A typical European household throws away between 20 and 30% of the food they buy, and a significant proportion of this is still perfectly edible. Wasting food isn’t just an economic and ethical issue - it also places unnecessary pressures on the ecosystems at the origin of our food. This session will look at the different stages of the food chain where steps could be taken to improve the situation. Discussions will centre round preventing waste and the role of policy-makers, the food packaging industry, retailers and consumers.
